Dana (Generosity)

The WDS Board would like to thank you for the many ways you continue to support retreats, workshops, and classes through your attendance and practice, through volunteering your time, skills, and energy, and through financial contributions as you are able.

As we continue into 2017, Westcoast Dharma Society continues to appreciate and rely on the support and generosity of the meditation community.

After twenty-two years of sponsoring Vipassana retreats and workshops, we are currently exploring some new directions away from Vipassana to other Buddhist meditation practices for experienced meditators.

At the end of March 2017, Linda McDonald is retiring from full-time work as the WDS Executive Director after twenty-two years of service. She will, however, continue to work for WDS on a limited basis, as WDS explores some new directions in the Indo-Tibetan Buddhist tradition, as well as continuing to offer Organized Residential Self-Retreats for experienced meditators across traditions.

In 2017 the WDS Board and the part-time ED will be offering a retreat program of one Concentration weekend workshop and two residential Organized Self-retreats, while BCIMS and Hollyhock continue the sponsorship of Vipassana retreats in Vancouver.

If you wish to support the continuation of WDS, please help by contributing a tax deductible donation.  WDS appreciates and relies on financial donations so we can continue to:

  • keep the meditation retreats inexpensive, and
  • offer registration fee assistance to those who would otherwise be prevented from attending our meditation retreats.

Because of past support and generosity, WDS events are continuing to be relatively inexpensive, and financial assistance continues to be available for those who need financial support to attend WDS meditation events.

Donations for WDS are Tax Deductible

Westcoast Dharma Society is a Canadian registered charity (#891854432RR0001), and your generosity is tax deductible.

Dana for WDS Teachers

WDS teachers offer retreats and classes in accord with the tradition from the time of the Buddha that those who offer the teachings do not charge for their teaching. The Buddha Dharma is considered priceless, and is meant to be freely available to all. Dana, which in the Pali language means generosity, is the Buddhist practice of extending generosity in gratitude for hearing the teachings.

WDS retreat and class registration fees cover retreat organizing costs including renting the retreat facility, covering the retreat flyer printing and mailing costs, contributing to ongoing office expenses, and paying for teachers' travel costs and per diem expenses. None of the registration fee goes to the teachers. Financial support for teachers comes from voluntary donations (dana) from those of us who hear and appreciate the teachings. Participants can offer dana in appreciation of the teachings at each retreat or class. These donations are essential and very much appreciated.

Retreat teachers are considered by Revenue Canada as independent from Westcoast Dharma Society.  WDS can not issue tax receipts for dana given in the form of financial contributions to teachers.

Dana from WDS to Support  Retreat Attendance for Those in Financial Need

Admission for young meditators (eighteen and under) at the nonresidential weekend retreats is free. Half-fee registration is available for anyone in financial need who would otherwise be precluded from attending the nonresidential weekend events. Additional financial assistance is available for those in extreme financial hardship, such that no one is prevented from attending any of the nonresidential weekend Dharma events due to financial hardship.
