Organized Self-Retreat for Experienced Meditators

with teacher-support from Linda McDonald

at Sea to Sky Retreat Centre, near Whistler, BC

Tuesday, August 22 to Sunday, August 27, 2017

A few single-occupancy platformed tents provided by SSRC are still available.  Waitlist for indoor spots.

Experienced Meditators  This organized self-retreat is suitable for anyone who has an established meditation practice and previous experience attending silent residential retreats.  Teacher support is limited to optional individual interviews.

Setting The Sea to Sky Retreat Centre (SSRC) is located just south of Whistler, BC on a secluded 40 acre site of extraordinary natural beauty in British Columbia’s coastal mountain range.

Single Room Occupancy  Retreats will be limited in size so most people will have a single room (first come, first served). More single occupancy space is available in this August retreat as the popular SSRC platformed tents will also be available.

Format Organized self-retreats are held in silence until the final morning of the retreat.  Sitting in the hall is time regulated to half hour intervals to maintain an organized container for practice.  Use of electronic devices (smart phones, ipads etc.) with pre-loaded Dharma talks and/or instructions to support your practice are welcome as long as they are not audible to other participants; i.e., earbuds or headphones are necessary.

The meditation hall will be for sitting practice; yoga and movement practices will be possible in one's room; audible chanting will be possible along the hiking trails. The retreat manager will be available for logistical concerns. The retreat supporting teacher will be available for individual meditation practice support. Meals will be vegetarian. Participants will have a daily "yogi job" of a half hour of service to contribute to the smooth running of the retreat.

Cost $525 (Canadian funds) or $425 (US funds) plus dana to the supporting teacher.

Dana (generosity) From the days of the Buddha, the teachings have been considered priceless and thus offered freely. Today, teacher support continues to come from students’ voluntary contributions (dana). Your retreat registration fee covers only the retreat administrative costs and participant room and board costs.  There will be an opportunity to offer dana to the supporting teacher and also to the retreat registrar and manager at the end of the retreat.

Travel to SSRC by car
The turnoff to the centre is located approximately 33 km north of Squamish. Don't miss the turnoff. You turn immediately after you cross the Rubble Creek bridge. Then you pass one road on the left and the second road is marked with a wooden SSRC sign on a tree. That's the way into the centre on the 3 km entrance road.

Here are the instructions provided by SSRC:

Take the Sea to Sky highway 99 north. The turnoff to the centre is located approximately 33 km north of Squamish.
The turnoff is announced on Hwy 99 with 2 signs for Garibaldi Lake/ Black Tusk Trailhead (the first is 2 km before the park road turnoff and the second 400 metres before the turnoff). The Park turnoff road comes immediately after a small highway bridge over Rubble Creek. Turn right onto this road, even though there is no sign right at that spot.  (You know you have missed the Park Road turn-off if you see a hydro dam on your right hand side, and further along, you pass Pinecrest and Black Tusk Village.)
Proceed for approx. 0.7 km.
Turn left (after approximately 0.7 km) onto the gravel road that is marked by a small wooden sign (on a tree) which says: "SSRC". This turnoff into the SSRC road marked by the sign on the tree is the second road you will pass. (If you have gone more than 1 km, you missed it.)
The centre is located at the end of this gravel road. (Approx. 3 km). Please drive slowly and mindfully. You may encounter a vehicle coming from the other direction.

Travel to SSRC by Bus

Please indicate on your registration form if you plan to come by Pacific Coach bus. Arrange your departure time for the 1:00 pm bus from the Vancouver airport to Squamish or the 1:40 pm bus departing from downtown Vancouver to Squamish, so we can in turn arrange to have someone pick you up at the Squamish stop enroute to the centre.

You will also need to purchase a return ticket from the North Squamish Bus depot for the 1:15 pm bus on retreat departure day. We will arrange for someone to drive you on the departure day from the Sea to Sky centre to the North Squamish bus depot.

The Pacific Coach bus schedule is subject to change every season. Please check directly with pacificcoach.com for details.
